Did a live Pride48.com segment with Veritable Virgo (who is soon to be a podcaster). You can now follow him on Twitter @VeritableVoices.
We talked about our next step is for Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. We also talked about food and diet. The story of my life, and apparently many of you guys’ too.
OK – when you 2 started to talk about; food, diet, weight and health, I really wish I had been there to share some stuff I learned about ME…and then in retrospect I learned that everyone is so different and then you must work out what works for you…
When I started my current job I weighed a total of 315lbs and had a 48″ waist pant size…
For a period of time before I started this job I was 100% self employed and worked from home; where I would get up with my partner, that would eat breakfast at work, so we just drank coffee in the morning.
Caffeine being an appetite suppressant killed my appetite, plus I had never been one to be hungry when I woke up like the “normal folk” so this was not anything out of the norm for me.
I would become so wrapped up in my work during the day that I would just drink coffee all day and “forget” to eat and then by the time my partner came home from work I would be starving…almost felt malnourished.
Now I taught myself to cook and really the only time my family put the effort into cooking a good meal was for special occasions. That is when the food tasted good.
Well I wanted to eat food that tasted good but could never really figure out how to cook for just 2.
And yes I will say it here, as I have said it before, my grandmother could only cook 4 dishes really well, maybe 5, she could bake like there was no tomorrow, but really if it came down to it she could BURN water.
Mom, not any better and she hated cooking so she would cook lots so it would just be warm up left overs.
(I think I just threw up a little bit — um yup yes I did)
So I grew up with NO appreciation for food, quality or enjoyment unless it was a special occasion.
Then I would gorge. Well sadly that is what happened with my partner and I, I would cook a large meal, I hated leftovers, would not want to waste food and so I would gorge, not wanting to waste anything and because it tasted so good, I shoveled it in. Then we sat on the couch for a bit to watch TV and then went to bed. BLOB it up turnipHed, blob it up!
So then I got this job I have now and we used to run all day, sometimes 9 flights a day that would be the equivalent of a milk run but at the same time you had to run your butt off to provide the service that was expected. It wore your body down and you needed fuel.
What happened? I learned to “graze.” I would eat a hard boiled egg here, a half sandwich there, maybe a handful of peanuts and a bit of yogurt.
What happened? Well in 8 months, without ever stepping foot in the gym, I went from 315lbs to 240lbs without even knowing it or trying.
In that time I found that I was hungry in the morning for most times, but I didn’t have an appetite and the thought of food made me sick where I would actually gag just thinking about it. So I decided that I didn’t care what I ate when I woke up, I had to eat and jump start my metabolisim.
I didn’t care if it was a brownie or a carrot stick – I ate it – and sure enough the engine kicked in and even more pounds dropped off and I was probably eating the same if not more when I was gorging at supper.
Now it’s like out of control and I am not gaining weight and eating constantly but how much I loose in the flab depends on how much EXTRA I do in a day, like going for a run or a swim or even a bike ride…
I have also worked really hard to slow down on my eating, plus eating often helps me because I do not get that “on the verge of malnutrition feeling” where I just want to inhale it all.
When I started running I found out I would have to eat a massive high protien meal/snack in order to have the energy to in the morning to run, come home then eat breakfast and I was still dropping the flab…
The other thing I learned for myself is that for supper I can not mix protien and starchy carbs, I can for any other meal but not at supper – made a HUGE difference….
Oh and I almost forgot – there is a book out there, I so wish I could remember what it was called I think it is called ‘eating for your blood type’, I learned that chemistry does really apply to human physiology. Hey if you are water and what you are putting into your body is potassium – expect some explosive results…
Don’t be afraid to experiment, for sure NEVER deny yourself anything, if you are going to indulge do it slowly, take a bite of that Big Mac, put it down, chew it, swallow it, wipe the “special sauce” off your face, rearrange the burger to stack up right, swallow, take a sip of water, then repeat – see how far you get —- let it go if it is not done – because there is always gonna be another one another time…
I hope that sharing what I learned inspires others to wiggle out what works for them. We are all different just like a Mazda runs different than a Mercedes and Valentino is different than Prada…find what works for you.
All the best!
