When I went back to Malaysia several months ago, I met with a bunch of my local gay friends. I convinced them to talk to me about being gay and living in Malaysia. It is both insightful, touching, and at time, sad.
Their experience and views may not reflect all gay people. But this is the reality for some in Malaysia.
aiyo…damn funny and tok!..
thanks for this podcast episode – i’m a gay malaysian in the UK. sometimes i take my unrestricted lifestyle here for granted. listening to this episode made me go through some self reflection and appreciate how lucky i am as an individual being able to do a lot of things here my counterpart in malaysia may feel constrained and restricted back home.
Thanks Billy for sharing your thoughts about this show. I felt the same way. That’s why I think it’s important to share their stories.
Thanks for listening. 🙂
I enjoyed this episode very much. Not only are gays being misjudged and misunderstood in Malaysia-those of us non-gays who understand, empathize and accept gays are also being judged unfavorably. Sometimes I get negative feedback for “supporting” this so called “unnatural” lifestyle. I do try to explain to them that you do not choose to be gay-you just are and it is what God intended you to be. There is no need for prejudice. Thanks to all of you for sharing your story.
Though some of us live out and proud – yes, even in Malaysia 🙂 – there is still a sense of pervading fear despite the lack of actual physical violence since even the hint of homosexuality is usually greeted by the public with derision and scorn. Makes it doubly hard to come out of the closet.
But we all try, slowly but surely. Most of my friends know – my family as well, and I’m working towards telling my parents. My ever-present boyfriend should be tell-tale sign enough.
Thanks for sharing your experience and stories.
