GLBT Online Podcast Community Opens Its Doors, Celebrates Queer Voices
History is being made as Apple, iTunes and podcasting give listeners the power to hear what they
want, when they want it, including the many voices of an international GLBT community.
CHICAGO, July 11 — On a hot summer night in New York City in 1969 a group of angry gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender persons fought back for the first time against a society which had failed to give
them a voice. Fast-forward to the present day: a group of GLBT podcasters continues to fight for a voice
much in the way those pioneering members of the community did some thirty-six years ago.
Introducing qPodder.org. Offering a centralized location for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
multimedia, the site acts as a virtual clearinghouse for both those looking for content, looking to promote
their content, or looking for assistance in creating content.
“qPodder is a virtual union for queer podcasters,” said Madge Weinstein, co-founder of qPodder and
producer of Yeast Radio. “It’s a place to meet other podcasters, interact with fans, and learn the tricks of
the trade. qPodder is here to get the queer podcaster producing and noticed.”
Weinstein also said that the site would act as a resource for press outlets looking for more information on
various GLBT podcasts. Press kits will be available upon request.
The site’s functionality furthers the community experience. Listeners are able to interact with one another
as well as podcast creators in a more valuable and constructive way than the current voting systems of
most podcast aggregate sites. Authors can use these features to promote their content, pool resources,
increase the quality of their shows, as well as assist other podcasters in using the medium to it’s fullest
potential.
More features are planned in the near future, including an aggregated feed where users can subscribe to
one feed in order to receive content from all member podcasters.
It is important to point out that qPodder.org is not solely for the GLBT community. The site is open to
anyone interested in queer art. “The queer aesthetic championed by qPodder.org does not require that
someone prove a particular sexual identity to participate,” said Wanda Wisdom, producer of Lucky Bitch
Radio and co-founder of qPodder.org. “If you call yourself queer or have something queer to say, then
qPodder is your place to say it.”
The initial launch of qPodder was a quantifiable success. Along with pioneering podcasts like Yeast
Radio, Lucky Bitch Radio, Feast of Fools, and Fox in the City, qPodder.org now counts over 30 podcasts
and more than 100 members with new content being added each day.
